Michael Carrick has not totally ruled out a late signing for Manchester United as the deadline approaches. The Red Devils have yet to make any additions in the January transfer window and that looks unlikely to change ahead of Monday’s deadline.
Despite that, boss Carrick has hinted that there could yet be a late surprise. Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game against Fulham, he said: "Never say never. A lot can happen and situations can be thrown up.
"Sometimes it is in our control, sometimes not. I am pretty calm. We have shown what we are capable of as a team."
The Red Devils have already put a plan in place for the summer, with the club prioritising a move for a new central midfielder. Brighton star Carlos Baleba, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest are all long-term targets.
Each of the three are expected to cost in excess of £100m in the summer. A new defender is also potentially on the club’s shopping list but that would depend on Harry Maguire’s future, with the England star out of contract at the end of the campaign.
A replacement for Bruno Fernandes might also be required. The Portuguese playmaker continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford and Carrick has suggested that his future will be decided at the end of the season.
He said: "We all want to win things. We all want to get better. We want to we want to improve as a team.

"We want to be successful and that's something we've got to work towards together, but Bruno's been fantastic since I've been here. He was fantastic when I was here before, so I've got nothing but good things to say about him.
"That's not to get too far ahead, you know. That's [his future] on the agenda a little bit, but my main agenda is getting through the game on Sunday with Fulham.
“Bruno's fully committed. There's absolutely no issues at all with that. Things further down the line [will be] addressed towards the end of the season or whatever. But now everything's positive at the moment."
Either way, United will be aiming to secure a Champions League place between now and the end of the season. Ahead of this weekend’s game with Fulham, Carrick’s side sit fourth with a one-point advantage over Chelsea.
