Hull City have completed the loan signing of Toby Collyer from Manchester United in a further boost to Sergej Jakirovic's squad.

As revealed by Hull Live, City have been trying to sign the 22-year-old since early last summer, and have finally got their man ahead of Monday's transfer deadline after agreeing a short-term deal with United.

Collyer's arrival continues what's been a successful few days in the transfer market for the ambitious Tigers, despite continuing to work under strict restrictions placed on them by the EFL, meaning they cannot pay transfer or loan fees.

The Tigers have already snapped up Yu Hirakawa on loan from Bristol City, and negotiated a free transfer for Kieran Dowell, with the pair featuring in their 2-1 win over Swansea City at the weekend, while Paddy McNair has also arrived, and so too Lewis Koumas.

Like the deals they already have in place with the Robins, Manchester City, Leeds United, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor, City will not be paying the Old Trafford giants a fee to get Collyer above other Championship clubs that were keen to sign him on loan. The same will apply to Liverpool, with a deal to bring in winger Lewis Koumas agreed, which will leave the club with seven loan players, and only five able to be named in a matchday squad.

Despite a disappointing spell on loan at West Brom earlier in the campaign, which saw him play just 12 times in the Black Country, Collyer remains highly-rated at Old Trafford, and City boss Sergej Jakirovic believes he will add to the options he already has in the engine room.

"We spoke already this summer. It was a very nice conversation together with Jonny Evans at that time, who was the loan manager (at United), but at that time he chose West Brom, which is OK I respect that," Jakirovic said previously.

"Maybe he didn't believe that we would have a good season, and have a good team. It was tricky back then, when you have an embargo, you cannot bring the players. Also, you must look after yourself because you need the minutes, and maybe in our team it's easier to get the minutes."

"He's a young player, and he's capable of playing in the six or eight position. He can run 12K every game, so I think that he can help us, we can help him, and I think he will fit in the team good."

Speaking about his move to the MKM Stadium, Collyer admitted the move to East Yorkshire had been a long time coming, but expressed his delight in finally getting it done.

“It’s been a while coming," Collyer said. "I know there was interest and a possibility in the summer, but now I’m really happy to have been able to make it happen in this window. The style of play the manager likes to bring to his players is really good for me – high energy, high output.

“I would say I’m an intelligent player and I always like to improve. Hard work is fundamental – otherwise, you won’t get to where you want to get to. The Championship is different to the Premier League – it’s hectic, but I like it.

"You face challenges every day in training and in matches, and it’s a great league to get better. My target was to get back out and play as many minutes as possible in a different environment and challenge myself. I’m looking forward to the atmosphere, seeing the fans and playing with my new teammates. I’ll always work hard for the badge and for the fans.”
