Carrick fails to rule out late signings before transfer window ends on Monday

Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick has failed to rule out late January signings despite the fact the window closes on Monday evening.

United were in the market for Antoine Semenyo earlier this month but the former Bournemouth attacker opted for Manchester City instead.

United’s ownership have refused to divert the £65 million they had been willing to pay for Semenyo which sourced frustration for former United boss Ruben Amorim. However, Carrick has revealed that “a lot can happen” before Monday’s 19:00 (GMT) deadline.

“I think we are just working through it, never say never,” said Carrick. “A lot can happen and situations can be thrown up. Sometimes it is in our control, sometimes it is out of our control that we have got to deal with.

“We are calm, I am pretty calm. We have got and we have shown what we are capable of doing as a team. We will have to see what the next few days bring. But we are calm about it.”

United currently sit in fourth ahead of their Premier League clash with Fulham and although a win won’t alter their position on the table, the Red Devils could close the gap to second- and third-placed Manchester City and Aston Villa to just five points, at least before both sides play their respective games.

Fulham, however, are in fine form and have lost one of their previous eight games in the league, while Carrick is fully aware of their threat.

“Marco [Silva] has got them into a really good team,” he said. “All of a sudden Fulham is a different game because we are at home. Taking anything for granted is bang out of order really and it might be the case the flow of the game is the same as the last two.

“There is no shame in that. We will deal with game in front of us and we will do whatever it takes to come out on top.”
