Tottenham star subject of big-money bid from Spanish giants.
Despite struggling defensively for the past few months, Tottenham Hotspur’s central defenders remain in demand across Europe.
Micky van de Ven, Spurs’ best player this season, is wanted by Liverpool in the summer. The Dutchman’s progress in N17 has caught the eye of the Liverpool chiefs, and they view him as a long-term replacement for their skipper, Virgil van Dijk. Having returned from a serious ACL injury in December 2025, Radu Dragusin is not short of suitors in Serie A. He wants to leave Tottenham to get regular minutes, which is not realistic here due to Cristian Romero and Van de Ven being the undisputed first-choice centre-back pairing.
Speaking of Cristian Romero, the Spurs skipper has been leading the team from the front. The Argentine international has become a mainstay in Thomas Frank’s side and has consistently made an impact at both ends of the pitch. The centre-back has also rediscovered his goalscoring mojo, netting six goals and registering four assists on top of that in 26 appearances thus far this season. Besides this, his G/A stands at a staggering 10, for Tottenham this season.
Tottenham have scored the most goals from set-pieces under Frank in the Premier League, and Cristian Romero has proven to be an asset. The talismanic qualities on and off the ball have been well-documented, prompting a European giant table a ludicrous offer for his signature.

Real Madrid offer €100m for Cristian Romero
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid have launched an eye-watering €100m bid to sign Cristian Romero. Los Blancos president Florentino Perez has sought to intervene in the club’s most testing campaign by tabling a big offer for the Tottenham skipper to bring much-needed stability to Alvaro Arbeloa’s side.
Romero has been linked with an exit from N17 on a number of occasions over the past few years, and Real Madrid appear keen now to finalise a blockbuster late winter deal in an attempt to fix their much-maligned defence. Los Blancos are looking to bring in the 2022 World Cup winner to Santiago Bernabeu before the transfer window slams shut on February 2.
Spurs cannot afford to lose their skipper at this critical stage of the season
However, a deal before the end of the winter window is highly unlikely to be agreed. Romero signed a new deal with Spurs in August 2025, becoming their highest-earning player and taking the captaincy from Son Heung-min, who departed the club to join Los Angeles FC. Rated as one of the best defenders in the world, the Argentine has now become the subject of a late Real Madrid offer.

While the Lilywhites may well be struggling to deliver positive results in the Premier League, they simply cannot afford to let their skipper go midway through the campaign. A mammoth €100m bid will definitely be hard to reject, but losing Romero at this crucial juncture of the campaign and so late in the winter window would be simply disastrous. Plus, bringing in an adequate replacement for the World Cup winner will be an uphill task, with Frank already handicapped by several first-teamers already on the sidelines.
Come summer, top club officials like Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange can discuss with Romero over his future and what he wants. The South American signing a new deal last year is encouraging, but the north Londoners would know that it will be difficult to keep him at the club if they do not compete for bigger prizes in the coming years.
For now, at least, Tottenham must shut down Real’s interest in our skipper.
