West Ham’s academy has long been one of the most respected in English football.
From Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard to Joe Cole, Mark Noble and Declan Rice, the Hammers have consistently produced elite-level talent, either for their own first team or for the very top of the game elsewhere.
Even today, the club continues to pride itself on giving young players a pathway, with academy graduates regularly training with – and breaking into – the senior setup.
However, not every highly-rated prospect goes on to fulfil their potential in claret and blue.
Now, one youngster once tipped for a bright future in east London has decided his next step lies elsewhere.

Highly-rated West Ham academy forward Elisha Sowunmi has completed a move to Tottenham Hotspur, according to an exclusive report from ExWHUEmployee.
While losing a promising youngster to a direct rival will sting for supporters, the Hammers have at least protected their long-term interests. West Ham have negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the deal, meaning they will benefit financially should Spurs move Sowunmi on for a fee in the future.
Confirming the transfer, Ex revealed on The West Ham Way Patreon: “West Ham academy player Elisha Sowunmi has left the club to join Spurs.
“The player had five months of his contract left and would have been a free agent in the summer after his agents pushed for a move. By letting him go now, West Ham have secured a sell-on clause if the player should leave Spurs for money in the future.”
Sowunmi only put pen to paper on his first professional contract with West Ham in June 2025, underlining just how highly he was rated internally.
At the time, academy manager Kenny Brown spoke glowingly about the winger, suggesting he was already catching the attention of the senior setup and had “all the talent in the world” to go far in the game.
A first-team debut never materialised, and that much-talked-about potential will now have to be realised away from the London Stadium.
