Eddie Howe opens up on Newcastle United 'reliance' on 4-3-3 formation

The Newcastle United head coach believes that the Magpies have a fluid system and can't be pigeon-holed as a team relying on 4-3-3

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has insisted that the Magpies are far from one-dimensional this season.

The Magpies operated with a 4-2-3-1 formation during the 1-1 draw with Paris St-Germain in the final Champions League group phase match. And the system worked well after a few early teething problems as Newcastle threatened to win the game in the French capital.

It remains to be seen whether Howe reverts to type at Liverpool tonight with Newcastle using 4-3-3 on 20 occasions this term in the Premier League. Although, Howe feels that his formation is a little bit more complex and is used in different ways depending on the opponents.

Howe told Chronicle Live: "Even the 4-3-3, everyone may see it as 4-3-3, but we play it in different ways in different games.

"It is very rarely the same system in consecutive games because the opponents are different, and then we have to slightly tweak things.

"Yes, Wednesday was a clear change in the system, although something we have done before this season, so it wasn't new. We have had varying success with it.

"Marseille was a good example of that where we changed system and we were really strong. The game got away from us after half-time that night.

"There are pros and cons for every system. There is no system that solves everything.

"If there was we'd go with that one."
