Newcastle United have been linked with an exciting Barcelona youngster.
Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Barcelona youngster Guille Fernandez.
Signing young talent has been a key staple of the Saudi-backed diet since the takeover four years ago. Yankuba Minteh is the biggest success story, with the Magpies flipping a £26million profit on the winger despite him never playing a game.
Recent arrivals have included Georgian wonderkid Vakhtang Salia and former Malaga star Antonio Cordero. Toon chiefs are now linked with a move for another Spanish prodigy.
Newcastle United want Guille Fernandez
Reports on the continent claim the Magpies have "repeatedly" asked about Fernandez’s availability. However, as one of their best youth products, Barca want to keep the midfielder at the Camp Nou.
The 17-year-old has been likened to Cesc Fabregas who, ironically, left Barca at an early age to join a Premier League club. Fernandez is thought to be one of the brightest talents produced by the La Masia setup in recent years.
An ankle injury has hampered his progress this season but he returned to full fitness in November. The playmaker will have one year remaining on his Barcelona contract in the summer.
Are Newcastle United being used?
As a Premier League club, Newcastle can offer better wages than most for youth players. There are noises within the Spanish media that the Magpies could be being played by the player’s camp to negotiate more favourable terms.
Borussia Dortmund are also thought to be keeping tabs on Fernandez - a sign of his potential. The Bundesliga club rarely miss when it comes to signing and developing youth players.
For now, Barca’s position appears to be robust that he is going nowhere. That could change in the summer.

Eddie Howe’s strong transfer message
Eddie Howe bullishly told reporters following the 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa that Newcastle must deal with the playing squad they currently have. This was his biggest admission yet that there will be zero incomings this winter.
“When you lose games like we did and fail to break Wolves down, I understand the questions,” Howe said. “We have the players we have, we have to find a solution with those players. There is no point in me thinking we need another type of player at this moment because it is not going to happen.
“The next chance to change the squad will be in the summer. It is about getting the best out of what we had.”
