Joshua Zirkzee verdict on January transfer ahead of deadline day amid Serie A interest

Joshua Zirkzee has been linked with a winter move away from Manchester United, with just days left until transfer deadline day.

While it has been a hectic January at Manchester United, it’s been quiet on the transfer front.

United have until Monday to sign a player, which they haven’t done this month, as any arrivals seem dependent on departures.

The only player to leave United this month is Joe Hugill, with the young striker signing for Scottish Premiership outfit Kilmarnock FC.

The Red Devils have also been busy sacking Ruben Amorim and hiring Michael Carrick as head coach before winning back-to-back games against Man City and Arsenal.

There is still time for players to come and go this month as the transfer deadline doesn’t strike until Monday. Carrick will be focused on making it three wins on the bounce when United host Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Joshua Zirkzee wants to stay at Man Utd

It has been a frustrating season for Joshua Zirkzee.

The Dutch forward has been limited to just 16 appearances and four starts in the Premier League.

Zirkzee has found the back of the net twice in those games, but he is likely to miss out on a place in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup this summer without regular game time.

After falling down the pecking order at United, Zirkzee has been linked with a return to Italy, where he reportedly has interest from Juventus and AS Roma.

According to The Sun, Zirkzee wants to stay at United for the rest of the season, even if that casts further doubts over his World Cup chances.

The 24-year-old has expressed a desire to remain at Old Trafford beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.

As things stand, Zirkzee is behind Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo when it comes to leading the attack for United.

It remains to be seen if Carrick has plans to play Zirkzee in another other positions, with his role likely to come from the bench for the remainder of the campaign.

Joshua Zirkzee waits for his first appearance under Michael Carrick

Zirkzee missed United’s previous two matches due to injury but has since resumed training at Carrington with Carrick and his backroom staff.

It remains to be seen if Zirkzee will make the bench against Fulham. That could be a chance for the Netherlands international to make his first appearance under Carrick.

Although Zirkzee is not a recognised goalscorer, he gives Carrick another option in attack, which will be welcome more now that Patrick Dorgu is out with a hamstring injury.

Zirkzee’s last appearance came in United’s 2-1 defeat against Brighton in the FA Cup.
