‘I say it every time…’ Harry Redknapp talks Newcastle United

Harry Redknapp has been talking about Newcastle United.

The former Spurs and West Ham manager, discussing NUFC as we are past the halfway mark of the season.

Newcastle United still active on four fronts.

The next month could well dictate the direction of where this season will be heading, with huge matches in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

First of all though the attention is very much on the Premier League, Eddie Howe and his players knowing that a win at Anfield would see them go above reigning champions Liverpool in the PL table.

A brilliant performance in midweek saw United so unlucky not to win away against PSG, with Harry Redknapp stating; “It has been a strange season for Newcastle, but they played well in Paris and on another night, might have even stolen all three points.”

I don’t think there would have been any stealing involved.

PSG gave Newcastle United a really tough time in the opening 25 minutes or so, but then, United grew into the game and by the time they equalised just before half-time, were giving as good as they got.

Then second half, whilst PSG had plenty of possession they totally ran out of ideas and energy, with Newcastle United comfortably the better and more dangerous team as they repeatedly counter attacked with purpose.

Now it is another very tough away match and ahead of tonight at Anfield, Harry Redknapp declaring; “I say it every time this fixture comes up, it’s hard for me not to think about those classic games from back in the day. Liverpool looked much better during the week but let’s face it, it was hardly a test for them. Maybe I’m too nostalgic but I’m going for another 4-3. Imagine that!”

Yes…imagine that.

Eddie Howe’s team were by far the better side at Wembley on 16 March 2025 and Liverpool lucky to only lose 2-1.

Speaking of luck, United have had very little luck under Eddie Howe when it comes to facing this lot and just maybe, tonight will be when that changes. Newcastle were brilliant with 11 AND 10 men against the scousers at St James’ Park this season, a travesty that Liverpool won that. The 3-3 at SJP the previous season was another that Newcastle deserved to win, whilst Alexander Isak’s debut was another, when he opened the scoring at Anfield and was then denied a second due to a very dubious VAR offside call, before then Liverpool fluked a very late 2-1 victory.

Only 24 days ago, Newcastle United fans experienced the thrill of a 4-3 late late victory, after having trailed Leeds three times.

Just maybe we can repeat that at Anfield tonight, although I would take a ‘boring’ 1-0 away victory if offered now…
