While the Clarets’ form has improved in recent weeks, drawing their last three games, they’ve still yet to taste three points in their last 13 encounters.

It leaves them languishing in 19th place in the Premier League table, 10 points adrift of safety.

The fortunes for Sunderland couldn’t be much different following their promotion via the Championship play-offs last season, with Regis Le Bris’ side sitting in 10th place.

While they were beaten 3-1 by West Ham last weekend, the Black Cats remain the only side in the top flight to boast an unbeaten record on home turf this season.

Who is the referee for Sunderland v Burnley?

Paul Tierney.

He’s overseen 13 games so far this season, dishing out 48 yellow cards but no reds.

This will only be his third Premier League game this term, having taken charge of games in the Championship, League One, League Two and the FA Cup.

In fact, Monday night’s game will only be his third top flight game in the last 20 months, having missed last season due to injury.

He’s since been working his way back to full fitness, starting in the lower leagues before returning to the top division.

What history does he have with Burnley?

This will be Tierney’s first game involving Burnley since December 2023, when they went down to a 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool.

Tierney booked both Dara O’Shea and Sander Berge, while Trent Alexander-Arnold also saw yellow.

He sent off Matt Lowton during Burnley’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in May 2022, having also dismissed Nathan Collins earlier that season during a 2-0 defeat at Brentford.

Who is on VAR duty?

Stuart Attwell, assisted by Nick Hopton.

Attwell was recently involved in a controversy involving Burnley after it was adjudged that he wrongly ruled out Lisandro Martinez’s strike during the 2-2 draw against Manchester United earlier this month.

Martinez thought he had equalised from a corner, only for Attwell – who was referee that night – to blow for a foul by the scorer on Kyle Walker.

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel voted 3-2 that it was not a foul and it should have been a goal on-field. But it was a 4-1 vote in favour of no VAR intervention.

Richard West and Mark Scholes will run the line, while Tony Harrington is on fourth official duty.
