Newcastle United round-up as England international midfielder linked with late-window move

The latest Newcastle United transfer rumours as the end of the January window approaches.

The January transfer window closes on Monday, and time is running out to get deals over the line.

It’s been a quiet winter market so far for Newcastle United, who are yet to confirm any major incomings or outgoings. That’s hardly surprising, given the massive sums spent in the summer on the likes of Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw and more - fuelled by the sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

However, Newcastle remain in three cup competitions and are still just four points clear of the top five in the Premier League, despite some inconsistent form. What’s more, their heavy schedule has resulted in yet more injury problems for Eddie Howe to manage, with the boss having to get the very best out of a thinned-out squad.

With that in mind, it wouldn’t hurt for the Magpies to dip into the market, but what are the latest rumours doing the rounds?

Newcastle among Angel Gomes suitors

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle are one of a host of Premier League clubs offered the chance to sign Angel Gomes before the end of the window.

Gomes joined Marseille from fellow French giants Lille on a free transfer in the summer and has made 20 appearances for the club across all competitions so far, registering four goals and one assist. However, the four-time England international has recently lost his place in Roberto De Zerbi’s side, playing just 55 combined Ligue 1 and Champions League minutes since 22nd November - including a two-minute cameo against Newcastle.

Now, it’s reported that Wolves are ‘confident’ of securing Gomes on a loan with obligation to buy if they secure Premier League survival. However, the Midlanders face fierce competition in the Premier League from Everton, Brighton, Sunderland, Fulham, West Ham and, of course, Newcastle.

Intermediaries are understood to have been testing the water in the English top-flight to try and force a late-window bidding war.

Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton have all endured injury problems recently, meaning Howe likely wouldn’t say no to an extra quality body in the engine room.

Newcastle in talks for Barcelona wonderkid

Sticking with the middle of the park, reports in Spain are suggesting that Newcastle are pushing to sign Barcelona youngster Guille Fernandez.

Just 17 years old, Fernandez is yet to make his senior Barca debut, but has already featured in multiple La Liga and Champions League matchday squads. At youth level, meanwhile, the central midfielder has eight goals and four assists to his name in 56 appearances - including seven goals and two assists in 40 outings in the Spanish third tier. Fernandez is also a regular for Spain at youth level, picking up 30 caps across various age groups.

According to Sport, the Magpies have already made ‘multiple approaches’ for Fernandez, and despite other suitors potentially being involved, club-to-club talks have already taken place.

While not one that would overly influence the Newcastle squad immediately, this is a transfer that could bear serious fruit down the line.

Magpies go cold on Frattesi

Sandro Tonali has been a huge hit at St. James’ Park, so it’s hardly surprising that excitement has been generated whenever fellow Italian national team midfielder Davide Frattesi has been linked with Newcastle United.

However, with no bid seemingly forthcoming from the Magpies, Nottingham Forest have now approached Inter Milan about the possibility of signing Frattesi on loan for the rest of the season, with the final decision ‘up to the player’ - according to Fabrizio Romano.

Frattesi has found himself marginalised with 20-time Italian champions this season, starting just three games in Serie A and the Champions League combined. The likes of Nicolo Barella, Piotr Zielinski, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Petar Sucic have held down the Inter midfield ahead of Frattesi, who is capped 33 times for Italy to date.
