Available Newcastle United shirt numbers ahead of potential January signings

Newcastle United are yet to make any January signings, but what shirt numbers are available if they do?

With the end of the January transfer window fast-approaching, time is running out for Newcastle United to make signings.

The Magpies are yet to make any major moves in or out this winter, which is hardly surprising given the huge sums spent on the likes of Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw and Co in the summer - fuelled by the British-record sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

However, Newcastle are still in three cup competitions and battling their way back into the upper echelons of the Premier League table, with Eddie Howe having to juggle another injury crisis amid a busy schedule. A few extra bodies wouldn’t go amiss, but what squad numbers are still available to any players who may come through the St. James’ Park doors?

What has Eddie Howe said about transfers?

Howe stated last week that he isn’t worried about a lack of transfer activity this month, and that he’d rather the powers that be at Newcastle not make any ‘rash decisions’ in the market.

“I'm not panicking. I think that the worst thing you can do in the transfer market is make rash decisions. We have our strategy,” he said.

“I'll say it time and again, PSR is controlling what we're able to do and I think you'll understand that gives us limited room to manoeuvre to try and bring a player in that's good enough to elevate the group and to have a long-term future at the football club.

“With the finances we have available, it's very, very difficult. So let's see what happens in the last few days. Anything can happen from this point onwards, but certainly we'll try not to panic and we'll try and make the right decisions.”

Even with the deadline fast-approaching, Howe doesn’t appear to have changed his position, though he hasn’t closed the door completely.

He said earlier this week: “Yeah, I don't anticipate that changing. But with time left, obviously there's still the chance for that to be the case.”
