Michael Carrick wants to sign 'outstanding' star compared to Bruno for Man Utd, but there's a…

Michael Carrick has made Hayden Hackney his top target to become his first signing as Manchester United manager if he gets the job permanently, according to Sports Boom.

The Red Devils have seen their fortunes turned on their head since Carrick's arrival as interim manager until the end of the season, with the team picking up consecutive victories over Manchester City and then Arsenal in their last two games, moving them up to fourth in the Premier League table.

It's currently expected that Carrick will only be in charge until the end of the season; however, the former midfielder is making plans for next season in case he manages to convince the hierarchy to stick with him, and he wants to bring in a familiar face.

Hackney, who has been compared to Bruno Fernandes and described as 'outstanding', has been a regular performer in the Championship in recent seasons for Middlesbrough, and was a key player for Carrick during his time at the Riverside Stadium.

Carrick is understood to have seen his chances of sticking around at Old Trafford beyond this season strengthened following the performances in recent games, and it's understood that Hackney is someone who has been identified as a player who can help with the planned midfield overhaul in the summer.

Hackney is now one of the most sought-after prospects in the Championship, but Carrick is confident that he could persuade the 23-year-old that a move to Old Trafford is best for him, and he wants to sign him if he is still manager.

Middlesbrough don't want to lose Hackney, especially if they are promoted, but Carrick's relationship with the player could make any move too tempting for the player to refuse.

It's still unlikely that Carrick will get the permanent job, with the likes of Roberto De Zerbi, Oliver Glasner and more linked with the role, but should he find himself selected then he will hold talks with Jason Wilcox to convince him of the move.

United are currently planning for a major midfield overhaul in the summer, with the likes of Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton heavily linked to replace the outgoing Casemiro and potential both Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes too.

But while the big names are exciting and of the required quality necessary, it's also fair to say that they can't all start every game, and bringing in options who aren't going to expect to play every game could be shrewd.

Hackney will have the quality to make an impact, but also has time on his side to grow into his role, and it could be an excellent signing if it comes to fruition.
