Player at Sunderland for medical after deal agreed – ‘Dream move’ to Stadium of Light

Sunderland are closing in on a deal for Malmö FF goalkeeper Melker Ellborg. He is currently in England for a medical.

That’s according to Expressen. The newspaper reports that Ellborg is set to become the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the Swedish league.

They report that Malmö are close to sealing a deal with Sunderland for the 22-year-old goalkeeper. That will be valued at 42 million kronor, just under €4m.

Ellborg is already in England for a medical with the Black Cats. He has enjoyed an impressive rise in the last few months, establishing himself as number one at Malmö and relegating Robin Olsen to the bench.

That’s seen interest in him rise. German side Hamburg offered 32 million kronor a few weeks ago but that was rejected outright. They eventually Sander Tangvik from Rosenborgs BK instead.

Now Ellborg is heading to Sunderland instead. That’s described as a ‘dream move’ for the goalkeeper. A deal has been agreed for €4m plus bonuses with the Black Cats. This has been confirmed to Expressen by several independent sources.

Elborg is in the North East for a medical and expected to sign his contract not long after should it go to plan. The move will make him the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the Allsvenskan, beating the previous 40 million kronor Brentford paid IF Elfsborg for Hákon Rafn Valdimarsson in 2024.
