'You have to remember your place sometimes'

David Moyes has delivered a passionate defence of Brighton and Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler following recent criticism of the young manager.

The Everton manager was speaking after watching his side score a last gasp equaliser at the Amex on Saturday (January 31).

Beto’s 97th minute strike levelled the scoring after Pascal Gross’ opener – sparking jubilant celebrations among the away fans and Moyes himself.

The result means Albion are without a win in four Premier League games. They have won just one in the last 11 matches.

Speaking after being asked about Hurzeler’s position, Moyes, 63, made clear his admiration, describing the scrutiny aimed at the Brighton coach as misplaced.

“My mouth is ajar,” Moyes said. “He’s doing an unbelievable job. You should consider yourselves incredibly lucky to have such a manager.”

Hurzeler, 32, has faced questions from fans in recent weeks. Some believe his job should be on the line.

On the BBC Sport website, a fan opinion post – from an Albion supporter named Michael – read: “Brighton are so awful this season, I’m going to cancel my family’s season tickets. I shouldn’t have to pay to watch this awful football every home game.”

Another fan named Paul wrote: "Hurzeler has to go now! Players constantly out of position, sideways football and Milner substitutions that lose us points just to get his record!”

Moyes warned against impatience and unrealistic expectations, pointing to the broader challenges of modern management.

“The grass isn’t always greener,” he added. “You have to remember your place sometimes.”

Moyes went on to suggest that Hurzeler’s potential extends far beyond his current role on the south coast, predicting a future at the highest level of the game.

“He’s an excellent manager and could be the German international team’s manager in years to come,” Moyes said. “He has big prospects.”

The comments represent a strong public endorsement from one of the Premier League’s most experienced managers. But time will tell how the Brighton board decide to proceed after a tough run of results.
