Alongside Strand Larsen: Crystal Palace racing to sign “incredible” Guessand upgrade - opinion

The month of January has been one to forget for Crystal Palace, with arguably the most successful side in their history being torn apart from top to bottom.

Marc Guehi left the Eagles in a £20m deal to join Manchester City, with the Englishman departing for a fee this window rather than on a free transfer in the summer.

Such a move came around the same period as boss Oliver Glasner announced he would be leaving Selhurst Park at the end of the campaign when his own contract expires.

The devastating month has spiralled since, with talisman and current top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta handing in a transfer request amid interest in his signature.

As a result, the club’s Premier League standing has taken a huge hit, but the hierarchy have targeted an influx of potential additions before the window slams shut on Monday night.

Crystal Palace now want to sign 13-goal talisman

In an attempt to bolster the attacking department, Palace have been strongly linked with a move to land Wolverhampton Wanderers talisman Jorgen Strand Larsen.

It was reported earlier this week that a fee in the region of £50m, including add-ons, had been agreed between the clubs - a deal that would have been a club-record for the Eagles.

However, the move has gone cold in recent days, with Glasner’s side now potentially moving on to other transfer targets in an attempt to improve the squad.

As a result, the recruitment team have been working tirelessly to identify possible alternatives, with Bodo Glimt star Jens Petter Hauge a player they’re now considering.

According to Sports Boom, the Eagles are racing to land the 26-year-old, who’s already netted 13 goals for the Norwegian side during the 2025/26 campaign.

The report also states that Everton are keen on landing the forward’s signature, which could result in a late bidding war as the window draws to a close.

No fee has been touted for the attacker’s signature this month, but his current employers are not looking to sell Hauge this window given his recent form in Europe.

Why Hauge would be a better signing than Guessand for Palace

In an attempt to bolster the frontline, Palace have already landed the signature of Brennan Johnson, with Evann Guessand the latest player to arrive at Selhurst Park.

It was confirmed on Friday that the Ivorian international had joined the club on an initial loan deal until the end of the campaign from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.

Glasner’s men are paying a reported £2m to keep the 24-year-old until the end of the campaign, whilst having a £28m option to buy in the summer window.

Guessand arrives at the Eagles having scored just twice in 21 appearances across all competitions for Villa this season, but his move will offer the side some needed versatility.

He can operate as a central striker or in any of the roles behind the striker, which could make him a valuable asset in the club’s ambitions of rising back up the league table.

However, a potential move for Hauge could have an impact on the new addition, with the Bodo Glimt star a player who would no doubt be a regular starter upon any move.

Away from his remarkable goal-scoring figures, he’s also managed to outperform the Ivorian in numerous key areas, subsequently showcasing why he’d be a better addition this month.

Hauge, who’s been dubbed “incredible” by one content creator, has produced a much better goal and assist tally per 90, which would hand Palace with the added attacking threat they’re hunting for.

He’s also completed more of the passes he’s attempted to date, whilst creating more chances per 90 - with more of his chances being defined as big chances.

The aforementioned figures showcase that the Norwegian star is a more all-rounded talent in attacking areas, which could hand the likes of Johnson the chance to improve his tallies further.

Away from chances created, Hauge has also dominated with his dribbling ability, subsequently completing more the dribbles he’s attempted in 2025/26 to date.

His talents are further reflected in his higher tally of aerials won and touches in the opposition box per 90 - which could arguably make him more of a poacher in attacking areas.

As previously mentioned, it’s unclear how much a deal for the Bodo Glimt star would cost before the window closes, but such a move would massively bolster the attacking department.

His incredible quality is evident from the stats he’s produced this campaign, with the Norwegian star undoubtedly a bigger talent and a better addition than Guessand.
