Liverpool 4-1 Newcastle United player ratings: Here’s how Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, Jacob Ramsey and co fared at Anfield.

Eddie Howe made three changes from the side that drew 1-1 at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Kieran Trippier coming in for Nick Woltemade, Sven Botman and Lewis Miley.

Bruno Guimaraes was named on the bench against PSG but didn’t make the squad for the trip to Liverpool due to an ankle issue.

Newcastle went into the game buoyed by their performance in Paris but knowing they had never won a Premier League match without Guimaraes nor a league game at Anfield since 1994.

Still, The Magpies are no strangers to leading at Anfield and took the lead towards the end of the first half as Anthony Gordon turned and finished into the bottom left corner of the goal to make it 1-0.

But Newcastle’s lead lasted a matter of minutes as Hugo Ekitike made it 1-1 with a close-range finish just before half-time. The French forward turned the game around with Liverpool’s next attack as he poked the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1 heading into half-time.

Ekitike had an opportunity to grab his hat-trick and make it 3-1 early in the second half but ended up dragging his shot wide of the left post.

Florian Wirtz made it 3-1 with less than 25 minutes left to play after Newcastle gave away possession in a dangerous area and Liverpool took full advantage.

Ibrahima Konaté then wrapped up a convincing win for The Reds as he pounced on Nick Pope’s spill to make it 4-1.

Despite taking the lead, Newcastle fell to yet another defeat at Liverpool as the wait for an Anfield win goes on.

Nick Pope - 5

Made a smart save low down to deny Hugo Ekitike just past the quarter-hour mark. Tipped away another effort from the French forward 15 minutes later but was beaten twice by him in quick succession at the end of the half. Won’t want to see the fourth goal again after dropping the ball.

Kieran Trippier - 5

Captained the side in Bruno Guimaraes’ absence. Recovered brilliantly to deny Mohamed Salah after being unfortunate in conceding possession. Slipped in the build-up to Liverpool’s equaliser and left space down his side for the second.

Malick Thiaw - 4

Put in a great challenge to deny Ryan Gravenberch on the edge of the box. Gave Ekitike too much time and space for the second goal and gave away possession in the build-up to the third. A costly showing despite some bright moments.

Dan Burn - 5

Kept his place in the side for his first Premier League appearance since the Sunderland match. Had a couple of shaky moments but still won some big headers when Liverpool were applying the pressure.

Lewis Hall - 6

Made a lively start to the game and tried to keep it going in the second half as he bombed up and down the left. Put in a good physical shift and was typically the pick of Newcastle’s back line.

Sandro Tonali - 6

Worked tirelessly in midfield. Blasted an effort high into The Kop from distance in the first half. Guilty of a couple of wayward passes at key moments and couldn’t stop Ekitike for the opener.

Jacob Ramsey - 5

A quiet performance compared to his fine display in Paris. Good with the ball at his feet, but couldn’t find the killer pass required.

Joe Willock - 6

Tracked back well to win the ball from Cody Gakpo. Did well in the build-up to the opening goal with a bursting run down the left. Played with more confidence after his midweek goal, just didn’t always make the right decision.

Anthony Elanga - 6

Made himself a nuisance down the right, despite not everything coming off for him. Performed his defensive duties well when required.

Harvey Barnes - 6

Won a free-kick in a dangerous area for Newcastle after cutting in from the left. Rattled the post from the resulting set-piece midway through the first half. Involved in the build-up for Gordon’s opener and came close again in the second half only to be denied by Alisson. Tried to do too much at times, and not enough came off.

Anthony Gordon - 7

Returned to the side in a central striker role. Was a menace across the forward line with his pace and carrying of the ball and was rewarded with a goal. His attacking influence faded in the second half, but did come close from the edge of the box in the closing stages. Booked for a foul on Alisson.
