Liverpool 4-1 Newcastle United: Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate cancelled out Anthony Gordon’s opener at Anfield.

Newcastle United suffered their heaviest defeat of the season as they were beaten 4-1 by Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.

The Magpies started the game brightly with Anthony Gordon giving the visitors a deserved lead when he found the net nine minutes before half-time.

But a quickfire double from Hugo Ekitike turned the game around and saw Liverpool take a 2-1 lead in at the break.

Florian Wirtz made it 3-1 before Ibrahima Konate grabbed a fourth in stoppage time to secure a convincing win for the home side that leaves Newcastle going back to the drawing board once again to find a solution to their away-day problems.

Eddie Howe reacts to Liverpool 4-1 Newcastle United

"We are really disappointed because I thought it was a strong performance,” The Magpies boss said. “4-1 is really hard on us. We scored a great goal, started really strongly and we were a strong counter-attack threat.

"It is just the manner of the goals conceded were really poor from our perspective. I would not expect us normally to concede those types of goal.

"I think you've got to give Hugo Ekitike a lot of credit, especially the second goal. I thought it was an unbelievable run and finish but I don't think we cover ourselves in glory on the small details.

"We switch off for a few seconds on a goal kick and you kick yourselves afterward because they are key moments in the game."

More points dropped from winning positions

Newcastle had the lead just four minutes before half-time yet found themselves trailing at the break and were unable to recover.

“The [half-time] message was that we are very much in the game and to keep passing the ball,” Howe added. “We felt like we were giving them problems. Our athleticism was really strong today. We started the second half really strongly.

"There were a number of set plays throughout that we probably didn't do as well as we should have done, On another day I think that game looks very different. 4-1 looks very comfortable and I don't think it was for Liverpool."
