Eddie Howe confirms senior Newcastle player could leave before transfer deadline

And the only player who could possibly leave between now and 7pm on Monday, says Howe, is Jamaal Lascelles, who is out of the first team picture at St James' Park.

Howe has stressed all month that Newcastle would only add to their squad in the current window if an opportunity cropped up to sign a player who could improve the Magpies in the long-run. He has also repeatedly warned about the need to think very carefully about PSR, with any business carried out this month impacting the work Newcastle would be able to do in the summer market.

And asked after Saturday night's 4-1 defeat to Liverpool whether he expects any signings before Monday's deadline, he simply said: "No".

In a later question about potential exits, Howe said: "The only one that possibly could leave is Jamaal Lascelles."

Lascelles’ Newcastle contract is due to expire in the summer, and the 32-year-old will not be offered a new deal on Tyneside.

The club captain has made 253 senior appearances for the Magpies since joining from Nottingham Forest, but only two of those have come this season and both were off the bench.

West Ham have been linked in recent weeks and Turkey has previously been touted as a possible destination.

Newcastle suffered a second successive Premier League defeat when they went down 4-1 at Anfield on Saturday night.

Anthony Gordon put the Magpies ahead in the first half but a quickfire double from Hugo Ekitike gave Liverpool the lead at half-time, and second half goals from Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate wrapped up the points for the Premier League champions.

Howe said: "I think we played really well in that opening passage of the game. Really dominant, strong, territory was really good.

"We didn't create a whole host of chances in that period but we were the better team and deservedly scored.

"Imploded, I don't know if that's the right word but we didn't defend well enough for the two goals.

"We'll go through both and pick them apart. That's what happens here. If you get the crowd in the game, and we did, before you know it we're chasing the game."
