Jean-Clair Todibo issues honest statement after red card for West Ham against Chelsea

Jean-Clair Todibo has apologised to West Ham supporters after he was sent off during their Premier League defeat to Chelsea.

A thrilling game came to an even more dramatic end at Stamford Bridge, after Chelsea came from behind to beat West Ham 3-2.

The Hammers had stormed into the lead but capitulated in the second half to leave west London with nothing to show for what was a fine first half performance.

Still, tensions boiled over towards the end of the game, after Enzo Fernandez had completed Chelsea’s comeback.

It’s a painful one – but who was your MOTM vs Chelsea and why?!

That was highlighted when Todibo clashed with Joao Pedro, after a tussle between Adama Traore and Marc Cucurella.

Todibo was given a straight red card for violent conduct and will now miss some crucial games for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as they fight against relegation.

Following the loss, the Frenchman broke his silence on Instagram.

Jean-Clair Todibo says sorry after being sent off for West Ham

Losing the former Nice defender is a major blow for Nuno, who remains without a new signing on the defensive front heading into the closing stages of the January transfer window.

Max Kilman, who has long struggled to convince, currently looks like the most likely player to replace him in the starting lineup.

Nuno was disappointed with Todibo’s red card against Chelsea and for good reason. It was easily avoidable.

Posting on his Instagram story, the defender appeared to realise that.

A statement read: “Under the tension and intensity of the match, I made an inappropriate gesture, contrary to the values of football.

“I fully acknowledge my mistake, without excuse or justification, and I take full responsibility. This behaviour does not reflect the person I am.

“I sincerely apologise to my club, my teammates, our supporters, and anyone who may have been affected by this gesture.”

West Ham have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League this season

West Ham do not top many tables this season, other than goals conceded and points dropped from winning positions.

To make matters worse, their disciplinary record is among the very worst in the Premier League in the 2025/26 campaign.

Only Chelsea (5) have amassed more red cards than West Ham (3) this season and the Irons are joined with Everton in that regard.

Todibo became the third West Ham player to have been sent off thus far, following Tomas Soucek’s dismissal against Tottenham in September and Lucas Paqueta’s red card against Liverpool in November.
