The January transfer window was a pivotal time for Leeds United in 2023, with Premier League survival on the line. As well as signing defender Max Wober and loaning midfielder Weston McKennie, they splashed the cash to land Georginio Rutter - but things didn't end well for player or club.

French Under-21 international Rutter arrived from Hoffenheim, where he had top-scored the previous season - albeit with just eight league goals. Leeds saw something in the player, who was yet to turn 21, and paid the German club a fee that would hit a club-record £35million with add-ons.

"I have a lot of energy and technique. Dribbling is my favourite on the pitch," the forward said upon signing. "Football is for the fans, and they are very important for the club, and I want to do more, bring a lot of energy for the fans in the stadium."

If Leeds wanted an immediate impact from Rutter, it wouldn't arrive. Just one of his 11 Premier League appearances was a start, and he failed to score a single goal as the Whites suffered relegation on the final day of the season.

He stuck around for a season in the Championship, delivering eight goals and 16 assists in all competitions as Daniel Farke's team finished third and fell short in the play-offs. When Brighton came calling with a £40m bid, he was on his way back to the top flight despite that Wembley defeat.

Rutter taking the opportunity to leave Elland Road was painful for some, but there was a recognition that Brighton had triggered a release clause. However, the way the move was announced caused a real stir.

On Brighton's official Twitter account, the club showed Rutter composing a post which read “Don’t go to bed just yet…". While the player himself may not have been fully aware, the wording was a play on an infamous Leeds tweet in 2014 where fans were given the same warning - expecting new signings as a result - only to see it followed by confirmation that Matt Smith and Dominic Poleon had left the club.

As reported at the time by The Mirror, fans didn't take too kindly to the whole affair. One accused Rutter of: "Absolutely no grace, no class there at all. Most fans would have wished you well but this is a really stupid thing to do.”

“Getting a player to do that when he doesn’t know the meaning behind it is low,” another wrote, appearing to point the blame at Brighton. However, there was some disagreement, with one saying: “Rutter is a grown man. He’d have known what that tweet meant. Not having it.”

After being eased into the first team in August 2024, Rutter has quickly developed into a regular for Brighton under Fabian Hurzeler. He scored five times in 28 league outings last season, including in a famous win away to Manchester United, while also scoring three times during a run to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

He started against Leeds in November as the Seagulls won 3-0 at the Amex Stadium. It remains to be seen what kind of reception he gets back at Elland Road in May, given the circumstances around his exit.
