Manchester United return to Premier League duty today, whilst also potentially monitoring transfer activity that could materialise. The month has been relatively quiet for United in the transfer market, with no fresh signings arriving at Old Trafford at the moment.

Whether this situation will change before Monday's deadline remains uncertain, with United running out of time to go into the market for reinforcements should they decide to make any signings.

Michael Carrick has made an excellent beginning as United's interim head coach, securing victories in his first two fixtures against Manchester City and Arsenal.

United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford for their Premier League encounter on Sunday, eager to claim maximum points in their final match before the transfer window shuts, reports the Mirror.

Here, the Manchester Evening News examines some of the most recent United transfer speculation and rumours that have captured attention over the past day.

Club Brugge star 'scouted'

United are reportedly showing an interest in signing Club Brugge talent Aleksandar Stankovic during the January window's closing stages.

Journalist Matteo Moretto revealed on Fabrizio Romano's YouTube channel that United have been sending scouts to watch Stankovic performing for Brugge, though they will face rivalry from Tottenham Hotspur for the gifted midfielder.

Inter Milan have also been linked with Stankovic, despite his departure from the Serie A club only last summer. It has been reported that Inter retain the option to bring the 20-year-old back in the summer.

Stankovic is believed to be valued at approximately £20million (€23million) this summer, though it's unclear whether United's rumoured interest will develop further at this stage.

United 'scout' Serie A defender

United have reportedly been monitoring Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic throughout the January transfer window.

According to Bosnian media outlet SportSport, United have been sending scouts to observe Muharemovic in matches and have been impressed by his performances.

The report further suggests that United also had representatives present to watch Muharemovic play for Sassuolo in their Serie A fixture against Pisa on Saturday afternoon.

Muharemovic, 22, completed the entire 90 minutes in the match against Pisa as Sassuolo secured a 3-1 win to climb to ninth position in the Italian top flight.
