Man United will have to replace Casemiro in the summer and they could be targeting another European great.
Man United have built a squad that is heading in the right direction even if there are still a few positions where upgrades need to be made.
What Jason Wilcox will also have to do is find someone who can replace Casemiro. The United transfer boss will have known that the Brazil legend will need to be replaced one day, but it isn’t an easy task given his status as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.
He is also one of the most decorated from his spell at Real Madrid. United have been linked with a couple of options, although they lack the experience that is maybe needed to partner Kobbie Mainoo in the engine room.
Man United linked with Bayern Munich midfielder
Both good players, but not leaders or wise old heads who can manage the midfield and keep everyone else right. One player who has been linked and mentioned by Fabrizio Romano in his latest transfer bulletin could be exactly who the Red Devils need. "
“My understanding is that Man United will go very big for midfielders in the summer – they could sign one, maybe two, midfielders in the summer transfer window, as Casemiro is leaving.
“At the moment, I’m not aware of anything advanced for Goretzka. He’ll have many options; Atletico Madrid wanted him in this January window, and he could be back. [There are also] Italian clubs, English clubs, German clubs. Goretzka will have plenty of possibilities.”
Would Goretzka be a good fit for United?
With 95 goal contributions in 292 appearances for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, Goretzka has numbers to match his physicality and presence in midfield and would dovetail nicely alongside both Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes. The 30-year old could be the sort of signing that encourages the captain to put pen to paper on a new deal and extend his stay at Old Trafford.
If United want to catch and then challenge teams like Arsenal and Man City, they need to sign players who would at least make the matchday squad for them. If they could make the starting XI then even better. Goretzka fits that profile perfectly. Not only is he a leader by example and instruction, he is also one of the most respected midfielders of his generation.
There is a reason why he has 67 caps for Germany and 15 goals. Competition will be fierce for his signature, but with the guarantee of game time at one of the world's biggest clubs, Goretzka might feel like he is making a sideways move from Bayern instead of a step down.
