Official Newcastle United update on what is possible before January transfer window deadline

There has now been an official update on the situation at Newcastle United ahead of the January transfer window deadline.

For United and their Premier League rivals, 7pm on Monday (2 February 2026) sees the winter window close.

Eddie Howe giving the official Newcastle United update when asked about one or more signings potentially coming into St James’ Park in the final 36 or so hours of the window.

The NUFC Head Coach giving a simple one word answer when asked if he expects any new signs by 7pm on Monday, that one word replay an emphatic; “No.”

The Newcastle boss then asked the possibility of any senior players leaving in these final hours of the window, Eddie Howe saying in his post-match Liverpool press conference; “The only one that could possibly leave is Jamaal Lascelles.”

Now aged 32 and his contract set to end on 30 June 2026, as well as totally frozen out of the first team picture these days, the former United captain hopefully finding a club where he can once again get regular football.

There had been claims on Saturday of a £20m bid from Fulham for Joe Willock but the club (NUFC) then briefed journalists that this wasn’t the case.

A number of clubs do have an interest in Willock who has 18 months left on his contract but no way Eddie Howe and the club are going to reduce the numbers in their active first team squad, with so many matches and so many injuries.

The only way Joe Willock or anybody else could have potentially left, was if a player was lined up to come in, which clearly isn’t the case.
