Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick would like to bring Marcus Rashford from his loan spell with Barcelona to the club if he is handed the permanent head coach role at the end of the season, as per reports.
Rashford, 28, joined Barcelona last summer on a season-long loan after falling out of favour at Manchester United. The move, completed in July 2025, followed a difficult period at Old Trafford, where he was dropped from the first team by then-manager Ruben Amorim.
The England international has, meanwhile, enjoyed a successful spell in Spain, recently joining the doble club by recording 10+ goals and 10+ assists across all competitions.
Having found his footing at Barcelona, a return to his boyhood club appears to be on the cards, with The Telegraph reporting that Carrick will look to bring Rashford back to Manchester United if he is retained as head coach beyond the season.
Carrick has adequate knowledge of Rashford as a player, with the pair sharing the locker room at Old Trafford between 2016 and 2018. While Rashford is contracted with Manchester United until 2028, it is believed that the forward is happy at Barcelona.
Adding to the intrigue, the Catalan giants have an option to trigger a £26 million deal at the end of the campaign, which Barca boss Hansi Flick is reportedly keen to activate. The report, however, added that there has been no communication so far between Barcelona and United over Rashford.
Teddy Sheringham gives Marucs Rashford ‘clean slate’ verdict in possible Manchester United return
Former Red Devils forward Teddy Sheringham has suggested that Rashford now has a ‘clean slate’ at the club following Carrick's appointment. Sheringham believes past issues with former managers won’t affect a potential reunion with his boyhood club.
“I think there are a few players like that, Sancho, Rashford, and Hojlund, who are out on loan at the moment,” Sheringham said in an exclusive interview via Mirror. “When a new manager takes over, everyone has a clean slate.”
He added:
“You don't know the situation or what relationship Michael Carrick has with all these players. He might have a way of making them perform. So it's great that they're still attached to Manchester United and that Michael Carrick has that option and has them at his disposal. Get them back in and see where their mindset is. They're obviously good players, so give them another chance if they want it and all is forgiven. That's the way I see it.”
To date, Rashford has made 426 appearances for United, scoring 138 goals and providing 79 assists.
