The latest transfer news as Wolves eye a bold move for a Southampton star who was at West Brom only last season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made contact with Southampton over the potential signing of striker Adam Armstrong before Monday’s transfer deadline.

The Old Gold are in the market for a new centre-forward as Jorgen Strand Larsen’s future is still uncertain. Wolves’ Norway international attacker has held talks over joining Crystal Palace, and reports earlier this week suggested the Eagles were in advanced negotiations over a £45 million plus £5 million deal.

That move has since slowed down somewhat, with Strand Larsen used off the bench in Wolves’ 2-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday. Strand Larsen is still likely to leave the club, though, with Nottingham Forest and Leeds United among those keen if he does not join Palace.

Wolves enquire to sign Southampton striker

In preparation for Strand Larsen’s likely exit, Wolves have spoken to Southampton to gauge the availability of Armstrong. The 28-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in 29 Championship appearances so far this season, has under 18 months remaining on his current Saints contract.

Our sister publication, the Express & Star, has exclusively revealed that Wolves have made an official enquiry to Southampton. Although Wanderers are yet to ascertain who their priority striker target is, Armstrong is on the shortlist and a swoop is under consideration.

It awaits to be seen whether Wolves would rather sign Armstrong permanently or on loan, but it seems to be a move with the Championship in mind. The former Blackburn Rovers man has struggled whenever he has stepped up to the Premier League, after all, with only six goals and seven assists in his 88 English top-tier appearances to date.

Could Armstrong cross the Black Country divide?

If Armstrong were to join Wolves, it would be highly controversial as it was less than 12 months ago that he was turning out for bitter local rivals West Bromwich Albion. Armstrong played 16 times for West Brom in the Championship last term, returning only three goals.

It really didn’t turn out as well as hoped for Armstrong, who couldn’t seem to find his feet at The Hawthorns. The Baggies thought the striker would be able to help them correct their goalscoring struggles, as he had scored 21 goals and provided 13 assists in 46 Championship games only two seasons prior.

Wolves, if they do complete a swoop, will be eager to see Armstrong return to that sort of form. Though it would first require Southampton to let him go.
