On January 9th, Sport Witness covered Catalan claims that Barcelona are set to use their €30m option for Marcus Rashford. The 28-year-old pushed all summer for a move to the Camp Nou, becoming the subject of mockery at times.
However, his desire to sign for Barcelona worked out in the end, with the club agreeing a loan with Manchester United. Part of that agreement was a €30m purchase option in the coming summer window.
Spanish clubs rarely use their purchase options so it was in doubt from day one. Rashford gradually changed that. He’s scored nine goals and added 12 assists across 31 matches. Clearly, he’s been a very important squad member for Hansi Flick.
Mundo Deportivo, who are well connected at Barcelona, stated: ‘The club intend to exercise their purchase option.
‘While it’s true that the player’s performance has been somewhat inconsistent, the club’s sporting management considers him a proven talent and one of the top players inHansi Flick‘s squad.’
Soon after came questionable claims from the UK that Barcelona would negotiate. That’s an easy punt to make, because why wouldn’t they? But Mundo had been clear that if Barca need to use that option then they will.
Michael Carrick taking over until the end of the season has seen inevitable claims that he’d take Rashford back. Whilst that may be another convenient punt, it’s actually helpful for Manchester United.
The claim quickly made its way to the Catalan media, and it’s ruffled a few feathers.

The idea of the Premier League club wanting Rashford back has increased appreciation of his impact.
Sunday’s edition of Sport states: ‘The English winger, on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season, is delivering every time Hansi Flick needs him, and his commitment to the project is total. The coaching staff and the sporting director seem convinced of everything he can contribute on the pitch.’
Sport then point out the clause.
Mundo Deportivo do similar, and it’s clear the danger of Manchester United wanting Marcus Rashford back is helping concentrate minds in Catalonia.
That perceived danger, regardless of whether it’s real or not, can help the Red Devils get all of that €30m.
