Newcastle United were badly beaten by Liverpool on Saturday despite taking a first-half lead.

Jacob Ramsey believes Newcastle United were their own worst enemy in the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool.

A bright start saw the Magpies dominate for most of the first half before taking the lead through Anthony Gordon. However, a rapid-fire brace from Hugo Ekitike stunned Newcastle before the break.

Eddie Howe’s men failed to rediscover the early intensity and were humbled once again at Anfield. The defeat stretches Newcastle’s winless run at Liverpool to 31 years across all competitions.

‘Our mistakes’ - Jacob Ramsey

Speaking to NUFC TV, Toon midfielder Ramsey thought the performance was “alright” but the goals conceded were avoidable. He said: "I think when we look at the goals, they're from our mistakes. It was always going to be tough coming to Anfield. We had a positive result midweek and we thought we could come here and do the same.

"As a whole, I thought we played alright. We were a lot braver in the second half on the ball, playing out from the back. It was disappointing for the goals, but we've got another game on Wednesday so head up, be confident and go into Wednesday."

Jacob Ramsey on Carabao Cup

The games come thick and fast for the Magpies as they travel to Manchester City for the Carabao Cup second leg on Wednesday. On the upcoming fixture, Ramsey added: “The gaffer said that (the focus switching to Wednesday) at full time. (It's) another big game on Wednesday, 2-0 down in the Carabao Cup semi-final - we have to move on quickly.

"If you look at our next three or four fixtures, they're big games against big teams. We wanted to win here today, but we've got to keep our heads up and move on. I don't think we need lifting, to be fair. It's a semi-final, I know we're 2-0 down, but it's a semi-final of the Carabao Cup - (there are) not many bigger games, do you know what I mean? So full of confidence, head up, and keep battling."
