Opinion: Three West Ham winners and two losers after Chelsea capitulation

The fallout from West Ham United’s late defeat at Chelsea continues.

Indeed, what is most disappointing about it all is that West Ham United actually played very well for large parts of the thrilling Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Still, for all that positivity, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side left with nothing following West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea.

Clearly, there are positives to take from the game – particularly after a brilliant display before half time.

Who is to blame for this? 😡

And, more importantly, what can be done to fix it?!

In fact, the Hammers were so good that Gary Neville believes West Ham can avoid relegation this season.

Given it left the Irons five points from safety (which could go up to eight by close of play on Sunday), however, it’s difficult to look back with many happy memories.

Still, and as the dust starts to settle, Hammers News will do its best to look back on the winners and losers from the game.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Winners

Crysencio Summerville

Crysencio Summerville’s fine form continued against Chelsea, with the Dutchman scoring a brilliant second after Jarrod Bowen had put the Irons into the lead.

With the Lucas Paqueta era now over, West Ham desperately needed someone to step up and help Bowen up front.

The former Leeds star has certainly done that. In fact, Summerville equalled a West Ham scoring record, by becoming the third player to score in four consecutive games in the post-Premier League era.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was another standout.

For the first time in his senior career, Wan-Bissaka recorded two assists in the same game as West Ham blew the Blues away in the opening exchanges.

The former Manchester United defender has not always convinced going forward but this was a reminder of just what an asset he can be.

That was surely Wan-Bissaka’s best performance yet.

Jarrod Bowen

Bowen’s importance to the cause does not need explaining.

However, his goal – although slightly fortunate – took him up to eight for the season and few would bet against him reaching his career-high of 16 during the 2023-24 campaign even in this dysfunctional Hammers side.

It was yet more proof that he belongs at the highest of levels.

Interestingly, after the game, Bowen made an important admission. For all the talk of Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactics, he urged his teammates to look at themselves.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Bowen said: “We’ve got to look at ourselves and not give up games as easily as I thought we did.”

Losers

Jean-Clair Todibo

Jean-Clair Todibo has suffered yet another setback in his West Ham career.

Just as the Frenchman was starting to improve defensively, Todibo was sent off against Chelsea for violent conduct.

How on earth do we REPLACE Jean-Clair Todibo?! 🤔

If you could tell Nuno what to do, what would you say?! 🗣️

He’s going to be a big miss…

Todibo’s gesture towards Joao Pedro was completely unnecessary and now rules him out for the next three games at least.

Nuno Espirito Santo

It had started to feel as if Nuno was turning things around at West Ham following a recent revival under the former Wolves coach.

Nuno, however, was brought crashing back down to earth after the interval in west London.

He will now almost certainly face more questions about whether he simply goes too defensive too early.

West Ham have an awful record of losing points from winning positions and Nuno will need to address that – or risk pressure mounting once again.
