Opinion: Aaron-Wan Bissaka was brilliant but we need to talk about another West Ham star

Aaron Wan-Bissaka surely just enjoyed his finest game yet for West Ham United.

While reflecting on West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to Chelsea too positively would be unwise given the context of the Premier League’s relegation battle, there’s little doubt the defender impressed.

Indeed, Wan-Bissaka was excellent for West Ham against Chelsea and provided two assists in the same game for the first time in his senior career.

How many points do we NEED from these next five games?

And how many do you think we WILL get?

Still, the former Manchester United right-back was not the only standout. Again, overlooking the sense of dismay with which the Hammers left Stamford Bridge would be unwise, but Crysencio Summerville’s outing warrants a discussion.

Crysencio Summerville continues good form for West Ham United

Prior to the game, young Ollie Scarles used the kind of phrase reserved for people in their 20s.

Reflecting on the former Leeds star’s fine run of form for West Ham, Scarles claimed Summerville was “on flames” right now.

When it rains, it pours for the winger. Before January 2026, he’d only ever scored one goal for the Hammers after joining from Leeds.

That has all changed now. In fact, Summerville equalled a scoring record for West Ham, with his fine strike at the Bridge meaning he has become only the fourth player to score in four consecutive games for the club in the post-Premier League era.

Summerville has thrived in a West Ham team that no longer has Lucas Paqueta in it. If anyone is going to help turn this around, Summerville looks like a prime candidate.

Crysencio Summerville hailed by Gary Neville after latest goal for West Ham

Pundit Gary Neville hailed the 24-year-old for his strike, describing it as a “brilliant finish” while speaking on Sky Sports.

The way in which he struck Wan-Bissaka’s cutback first time spoke of a player operating with supreme confidence right now.

That makes it four goals and two assists in his last five games, which is quite the return for a player who previously did not convince.

Nuno Espirito Santo is getting the best out of Summerville and the hope will be that it’s not too little too late.
