MILWALL have signed Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson on loan until the end of the season.
Patterson is the Lions’ third addition of the window, following Barry Bannan and Tommy Watson, whose loan switch was also announced on Sunday.
The 25-year-old shotstopper was the Black Cat’s number one last season as they achieved promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs, starting in the final against Sheffield United and making two key saves as they won 2-1.
However, Patterson has started just one cup game this season, with summer signing Robin Roefs preferred between the sticks.
Sunderland signed Swedish goalkeeper Melker Ellborg on Saturday, paving the way for Patterson to move to SE16.
“I am delighted to welcome Anthony to the football club,” said Steve Gallen, Millwall’s Director of Football.
“He has big-game experience under his belt and he was ever-present for Sunderland last year. He will now link-up with the goalkeeping department and add competition with regards to a starting position.
“There were a lot of clubs interested in Anthony, so I am very pleased that he selected us.”
Patterson has worked with Millwall head coach Alex Neil before. Shortly after Neil was appointed Sunderland boss in January 2023, Patterson was recalled from loan and was his first-choice goalkeeper during their successful promotion campaign, starting in the League One play-off final, a 2-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers. He spent the first half of that season on loan at Notts County in the National League, his first loan stint after coming through the Black Cats’ academy.
