Michael Carrick hailed the work his coaching staff have done on the training ground with Benjamin Sesko after he scored a dramatic winner against Fulham. Sesko came off the bench and produced a confident finish to win the match 3-2 in the 94th minute on Sunday.

The Slovenia international has struggled for consistency since joining United in a £74million transfer from RB Leipzig in the summer. He has scored six goals in 21 appearances so far and been outshone by fellow summer arrivals Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

But it was the 22-year-old who earned the plaudits against Fulham after he managed to put a early miss, when he planted a header onto the post, behind him. Sesko gathered Bruno Fernandes' cross and fired into the top corner on the swivel to move United into the top four of the Premier League.

His goal cancelled out Fulham's late burst from Raul Jimenez and Kevin, and ensured some praise from Carrick, although the interim United boss also made a point of shouting out Travis Binnion, who has been promoted from under-21s coach to the first team staff following Ruben Amorim's sacking.

"Huge moment. I'm so, so pleased," Carrick said post-match. "I think everyone in the changing room, players, staff, absolutely delighted for him and the reception he got when he came back in the changing room, kind of told us everything.

"He's been confident, to be honest. I think he's been fantastic. We've worked with him a lot in different ways over the last couple of weeks. He's been bright in training, he's looked dangerous, he's done extra. The coaches have done a lot of bits on the side, and Trav particularly has done a lot of work one-on-one with him.

"Ben's a big talent and he's got so many positive things and today's a huge goal because that feeling as a striker you have to score a winner in front of the Stretford End like that, it's kind of what you dream of really and after missing a chance, which is what it is for strikers to miss chances to go again, and put that away, absolutely so, so pleased from him. He really deserves it."

Binnion made the step up from the under-21s to the first team when Darren Fletcher was made caretaker when Amorim was sacked in early January. He has retained the promotion in Carrick's staff and has clearly been working with Sesko in recent weeks.

He first joined United in 2019 from Sheffield United's academy to take charge of the under-16s, before eventually taking charge of the under-18s and then the under-21s in the summer of 2023.
