But Everton were always operating with caution, and would only really act if they felt there were good deals to be done.

But then the injury to Jack Grealish happened.

And this has prompted Everton to go after Tyrique George, the promising young winger from Chelsea who currently isn’t featuring much.

Everton were confident they could sign George before the deadline. And it looks like this move will now happen, after Everton reached an agreement in principle for George.

But given what’s been reported about the future of Dwight McNeil, there is perhaps another winger move Everton should be looking to make.

Everton are now down to just three wide options; Iliman Ndiaye, Dwight McNeil and Tyler Dibling.

McNeil and Dibling are struggling for form at the moment, so it’s paramount that Everton bring someone in.

It’s looking like George will sign, which is great. But Everton should actually also consider moving for Allan Saint-Maximin, who has just become a free agent after a spell with Club America. The club confirmed the news on Sunday.

Of course, Saint-Maximin used to play in the Premier League with Newcastle United and while he wasn’t always consistent, he was capable of doing special things on the pitch.

Saint-Maximin was adored by the Newcastle fans for his unpredictability and this is something Everton could really use right now. Especially with Grealish being injured.

Saint-Maximin also has pace, which is something else Everton don’t have a great deal of out wide.

It’s been suggested that Everton could yet offload McNeil before the transfer deadline if they could find a replacement. Saint-Maximin, who would bring far more threat than the Everton number seven, could be that man.

Saint-Maximin could be an Everton cult hero

Since leaving Newcastle in 2023, Saint-Maximin has had spells in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and most recently Mexico.

But he’s still only 28 and it’s not out of the question Saint-Maximin could still do a job in the Premier League.

If the George deal collapses, then Everton ought to consider the Frenchman, who is a player who could genuinely achieve cult hero status at the Hill Dickinson Stadium through his personality on and off the pitch.

There would be little risk since he’s played in the English top-flight before, plus he’s also now a free agent.

Granted Saint-Maximin’s injury record wasn’t so perfect during his time in England. But to sign a player with his ability for no transfer fee seems like a risk worth taking, especially if it meant McNeil moving on.
