Sunderland's 2025/26 net spend compared to Premier League rivals ahead of transfer deadline day

How does Sunderland's net spend since securing promotion compare to their rivals across the Premier League?

Jocelin Ta Bi has been the only new arrival at the Stadium of Light after a £3m deal was agreed with Israeli club Maccabi Netanya - although midfielder Milan Aleksic was recalled from a loan spell with Polish outfit Cracovia. There have been several departures with promotion winning captain Dan Neil effectively bringing an end to his time with his boyhood club as he sees out the final months of his current control out on loan at Championship promotion contenders Ipswich Town.

Arthur Massuaku and Timothee Pembele have both gone on loan to French clubs as they spend the rest of the season with Lens and Le Havre respectively and Portsmouth and Aji Alese will hope to help Portsmouth in their battle against relegation from the Championship after agreeing to a temporary spell on the south coast. Joe Anderson has joined League Two club Barrow on a permanent basis and Blondy Nna Noukeu has also left Wearside after agreeing a permanent deal with French second tier side US Boulogne.

Perhaps Sunderland’s quiet January transfer window should not be a surprise after the Stadium of Light hierarchy authorised an ambitious recruitment drive during the summer as they prepared the club for their big return to the Premier League. Signings such as Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki and Robin Roefs have helped Regis Le Bris’ side impress throughout the season so far and are providing solid foundations for what they hope will be a bright future on Wearside. But how does Sunderland’s net spend since securing promotion with a dramatic Championship play-off final win against Sheffield United compare to their Premier League rivals?

We take a look at the facts and figures according to TransferMarkt.

What has Regis Le Bris said about Sunderland transfers ahead of deadline day?

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Monday’s home game with Burnley, Le Bris said: “I won't comment on individual players but the market is often the same: a lot of interest, many conversations, not many deals. For us as a club and a team we don't have to rush anything. We're happy with our squad. If we can reinforce our team we'll try. There’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes and it’s better for us stay under the radar. We'll see what happens. It's still possible. The market is the market and it's unpredictable. And I repeat, the end of the market is often more active.I'm always optimistic, we'll see if I'm naïve!”
