Glory for the Gunners as Arsenal add FIFA Women’s Champions Cup to European Crown

UEFA Women’s Champions League winners Arsenal have added the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup to their trophy cabinet at Emirates Stadium thanks to an extra-time goal from Caitlin Foord.

The Gunners with homefield advantage in front of 25,031 spectators they beat Corinthians 3-2 after extra-time at a rain sodden Emirates. Arsenal looked set to win in normal time only for Ireland captain Katie McCabe to concede a VAR awarded penalty that Vic Albuquerque rifled home in the sixth minute of second half injury time.

Arsenal had qualified for the tournament after overcoming Barcelona 1-0 in the UEFA Women's Champions League final in Lisbon last May. That victory automatically put them into the semi-finals, where they beat Moroccan side ASFAR 6-0 at Brentford Stadium last Thursday.

Corinthians booked their spot in the final after a shootout victory over Deportivo Cali in the CONMBEOL Copa Libertadores Femenina last October. In the Champions Cup semi-final they beat Concacaf representatives Gotham FC.

Goals from Olivia Smith and Lotte Wubben-Moy put Arsenal ahead twice in the final but the Brazilian side came back twice before Caitlin Foord struck the winner with a low shot on the break in the 104th minute.
