Man United considered bringing a former academy startlet back to Old Trafford back to the club in the summer and he is on his way to the Premier League.
Manchester United’s rich history of promoting players from within is known throughout the world.
The Busby Babes and Class of ‘92 are famous for the football that they played and the trophies that they won. Modern football has changed though with recruitment teams regularly casting their net far and wide to lure the best young talent from abroad and into academies. The local boy done good is becoming rarer and rarer.

United are blessed to still have players like Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford on their books. Rashford might be on loan at Barcelona but he has more than served his time at Old Trafford and provided a beacon of hope for local kids who dream of stardom. Mainoo has been restored to the starting XI and is displaying the sort of leadership that Rashford did before his falling out.
Nine years ago it was another name making the headlines when Angel Gomes became a Premier League record breaker as the first player to play who was born since the year 2000. He became United’s youngest Premier League player in the process too. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 25-year-old is heading home: “Wolves agree deal in principle to sign Angel Gomes, here we go! Loan move from Olympique Marseille for €1m fee plus buy option clause around €7m fee. OM have approved the deal, waiting for formal steps and documents ahead of signatures.”
When Gomes made the headlines
Gomes has come a long way since he caught the eye of the footballing world as a fresh-faced 16-year old with the world at his feet. He might have been born in London, but there is only one place where he really feels at home, as told to Sky Sports: "It's a dream come true. I've been here since the age of six working my way up, and it's what everyone dreams about.
"I just want to thank the manager for putting me on the bench and playing me today, and all the staff back at the club and everyone who has helped me. I'm from Manchester, Salford and it's literally down the road. It's just unbelievable.""It happened so quickly, from Thursday getting the award, training on Friday and making an impression in Saturday's training before being named on the bench today and coming on.
"My family were in the crowd. I was fortunate to get 10 tickets for all my family and I saw them in the corner when I was warming up and gave them a little thumbs-up. It was amazing.” Unfortunately for Gomes, Wolves don’t play United again this season so he will have to wait before he gets the chance to play at the ground where he made his name.
