Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Fulham involved several controversial VAR decisions.
Benjamin Sesko will steal the headlines after scoring a dramatic injury-time winner in Manchester United’s 3-2 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have become the great entertainers of the Premier League, with every match in recent months guaranteeing goals, drama and excitement. The three goals scored against Fulham means United have beaten their goal tally from 2024/25 already.

But aside from the five goals, there was plenty of refereeing drama at Old Trafford, with three big penalty calls and a disallowed goal for the visitors.
Fulham scored from a penalty conceded by Harry Maguire, while United were denied two spot kicks of their own by VAR.

The first of United’s penalty calls came in the first half when Bryan Mbeumo was taken down in the box. Referee John Brooks didn’t award a spot kick and VAR agreed with his decision.

United in Focus have spoken exclusively to Mark Clattenburg about the decision, and the former Premier League referee has had his say.
“I disagree with many people’s opinion on a penalty claim for Manchester United when Bryan Mbeumo was challenged for the ball inside the penalty area by Fulham’s Jorge Cuenca,” Clattenburg said.
“The referee’s and VAR call of play-on was correct based on the slow-motion replays, as it shows that Cuenca gets a clear contact on the ball before any contact which was made in challenging for the ball.”
Fulham boss Marco Silva rages at referee decisions
After the full-time whistle, Fulham manager Marco Silva unleashed a rant at the referees for their decision-making at Old Trafford.
In particular, Silva was frustrated with a later decision where Matheus Cunha was awarded a penalty, only for VAR to intervene and award a free-kick outside of the box.
“The story of the game started with a horrendous, terrible decision from John Brooks with the penalty he gave. Horrendous decision from that moment, big, big mistake,” Silva said.

“The penalty was given by the tackle. After, because the decision was so bad, they found a different foul.
“I feel my players, I feel our fans but we have to respect the people in charge. I know why the penalty was given. VAR went in a completely different direction to find something to find a free-kick that was not the reason why the penalty was given.”
