It’s transfer deadline day and Newcastle United have already sanctioned one senior exit.

Jamaal Lascelles is set to leave Newcastle United before tonight’s 7pm transfer deadline.

Newcastle have been hit with several defensive injuries in the past month but Lascelles has not been considered for selection in preparation for a potential exit.

Lascelles joined the Magpies over a decade ago from Nottingham Forest and has gone on to make 253 appearances, the majority of which came as captain.

But since sustaining an ACL injury in March 2024, the 32-year-old has made just two substitute appearances, both of which came in September against Arsenal and AFC Bournemouth.

Lascelles was last named in a matchday squad in November.

Newcastle United sanction Jamaal Lascelles exit

Lascelles is out-of-contract in the summer and speaking earlier this month, Howe revealed it was a “possibility” the centre-back would be leaving this winter.

“He's not training with us currently,” Howe said on January 9. “He hasn't felt well enough physically to train... good enough. I don't necessarily think that he's injured in the sense that he's got one big injury, I just think his body's not feeling great.

“So he's not training with us currently. We hope that will change in the next few weeks.

“But yeah, there's a possibility that he could leave as well. Jamaal's been an incredible servant. He's a great leader for us behind the scenes. So, let's wait and see what happens on his future.”

Howe then confirmed that remained the case when asked about potential outgoings after the 4-1 defeat away to Liverpool on Saturday night.

“I think the only one that possibly could leave would be Jamaal Lascelles,” said Howe.

As per Sky Sports News, Lascelles is set to undergo a medical at Championship side Leicester City today.

Newcastle United rule out deadline day signings

Howe has ruled out any senior signings but says he and club chiefs will be “discussing” whether to recall Matt Targett from his loan spell at Middlesbrough “until the end of the window”.

The Magpies are without Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento until April and March, respectively, while Sven Botman is currently being assessed after he was named on the bench against Liverpool but unable to play due to a tight thigh. There is still no clear return date for Emil Krafth.

Recalling Targett undoubtedly makes sense, however Howe is keen to respect the player’s wish to remain on Teesside.

Boro are pushing for automatic promotion to the Premier League and Targett, who is out of contract at Newcastle in the summer, wants to make his stay permanent.

Quizzed on Targett last week, Boro boss Kim Hellberg said: "He's happy here. I think he’s an unbelievable character, such a good person with everyone, always helping everyone, always happy. He’s top.”
