Preston transfer deadline day state of play: Everton deal blow, Portsmouth deal drags on

PNE have until 7pm to conclude their transfer business

Preston North End’s transfer window is going down to the wire as the Lilywhites look to strengthen on deadline day.

The Lilywhites were dealt a blow on Sunday, though, with itreported that Everton have decided against sending Harrison Armstrong back on loan to Deepdale. Toffees boss David Moyes had kept the possibility open all month but, after drawing 1-1 at Brighton, opted to keep the 19-year-old on board after five successive starts.

Throughout the window, PNE boss Paul Heckingbottom has made his wish clear and that was the case after Saturday’s draw at Ipswich Town. North End’s manager wanted one more attacker bringing in plus a midfielder - whether that is Armstrong or not. Now, it is clear it won’t be the Everton man.

Time will tell just how far down the line Preston are with regards to a backup plan - that is something Heckingbottom was asked about last Thursday. As well as Armstrong’s loan ending early, the Lilywhites sold Stefan Thordarson to Hannover so are now two bodies light in midfield - from the start of the window.

On top of that, reports surfacedon Sunday that Danish Superliga outfit Brondby are eyeing a late move for Mads Frokjaer. The Dane has struggled for game time in his third season at Deepdale and a fee around £1.5m has been mooted in Denmark. Frokjaer is contracted until 2027 at PNE.

Callum Lang pursuit

As for PNE’s attacker search, a deal for Portsmouth’s Callum Lang is still being pushed for in the final hours of the window. North End have been trying to agree a deal with Pompey in the last few days, with Lang thought to be keen on the move. A fee of £1.75m was suggested by The News on Friday evening.
