Sunderland have completed two pieces of transfer business, but Kristjaan Speakman has been dealt a setback in the club’s pursuit of a winger
Sunderland’s late-window business is taking shape, with key decisions now confirmed across the squad as deadline day approaches.
Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has completed his loan move to Millwall, bringing an end to his immediate involvement on Wearside after losing his starting place earlier this season. Sunderland have already moved to address his departure, confirming the signing of Melker Ellborg from Malmö FF.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper has joined the club for an undisclosed fee, subject to international clearance, and has signed a long-term contract at the Stadium of Light running until the summer of 2030. Ellborg’s arrival ensures Régis Le Bris retains depth and competition in the goalkeeping department, with the Sweden-based shot-stopper viewed as a longer-term addition rather than a short-term fix.
Defensively, Lutsharel Geertruida now looks set to remain at Sunderland despite late speculation linking him with a move to Liverpool. The Dutch international is currently on loan from RB Leipzig and has no recall clause in his agreement, meaning any transfer would have required Sunderland’s consent. With little time left in the window and no desire to weaken the squad without a replacement in place, Sunderland have stood firm, and Geertruida is expected to see out the remainder of the season on Wearside.
Elsewhere, Sunderland have been mentioned in speculative reports linking them with Real Madrid forward Endrick. Spanish outlet Fichajes has claimed Sunderland and Leeds United are among clubs monitoring the Brazilian teenager, who is currently on loan at Lyon. However, the source has previously produced questionable Sunderland-related links, and given Endrick’s reported valuation of around £51million, the claims are best treated with caution.
Endrick has made an immediate impression in France following his six-month loan move, scoring in both cup and league competition. Real Madrid, though, are understood to be relaxed about his situation, viewing the loan as part of a broader development plan rather than a prelude to a permanent exit.

Chelsea have been open to moving the 19-year-old on due to limited first-team opportunities, despite his productive output since breaking into senior football. George has recorded six goals and six assists in 37 appearances, and attracted interest from clubs in England and abroad. Fulham had agreed a £22million deal for the winger last summer before later withdrawing to pursue alternative targets.
For Sunderland, the focus now shifts to whether any further late business is required. With a new goalkeeper secured, Geertruida staying put and speculative links filed appropriately, the Black Cats appear intent on controlled, targeted recruitment rather than deadline-day disruption.
