The latest on the Angel Gomes to Wolves transfer saga as Fabrizio Romano provides an update.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are still on track to complete the deadline day signing of Angel Gomes from Olympique Marseille.

The Old Gold have been keeping close tabs on Gomes’ situation in Ligue 1 and made their move last week, seeing a loan-to-buy offer accepted. According to widespread reports and now corroborated by Birmingham World, Wolves will pay a €1 million (£850k) loan fee and then have the option to buy Gomes in the summer for €7 million (£6m).

Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi gave the deal the go-ahead on the weekend and Wolves have since been working on the formalities. There haven’t been many things to cheer for the Old Gold this season but this is certainly one, as Gomes has the ability to make a big difference, whether that be in the Premier League this season or in the Championship next.

Fabrizio Romano confirms £7m Wolves transfer imminent

Gomes is set to be announced as a Wolves player later today, as long as he passes his medical tests. According to transfer news specialist Fabrizio Romano, Gomes’ medical is currently ‘ongoing’ this Monday morning, so the deal is well on track to be completed.

Wolves are also working on at least two other incoming deals, with Southampton striker Adam Armstrong expected to join and a late swoop plotted for Torino centre-forward Che Adams. The Old Gold are trying to prepare as best as possible ahead of their likely return to the Championship, getting a step ahead of the competition.

All of these moves likely have the English second tier in mind and more could yet develop as deadline day progresses. That is, of course, if the £43 million exit of Jorgen Strand Larsen is confirmed. Crystal Palace are still working on the deal to bring the Norway international to Selhurst Park, but it’s not done just yet.

How will Angel Gomes fit in at Wolves?

Capped four times by England as recently as the end of 2024, Gomes joined Marseille on a free transfer from LOSC Lille in the summer but it hasn’t quite worked out as hoped. The 25-year-old has played just 892 minutes in Ligue 1, playing more of a backup role than he may have anticipated.

It has been over half a decade since Gomes left Manchester United and a return to the Premier League has often been tipped in transfer windows. Now, many years on, it seems Wolves are going to get their hands on the Londoner, offering him at least a brief experience in the top flight.

Wolves are almost certainly going to get relegated to the Championship but signing someone of Gomes’ calibre at least brings some positivity to the place. The midfielder, who can play as a number 10, a little further back as a six or an eight, or even on the left flank, should offer head coach Rob Edwards plenty of flexibility.

It may be difficult to occupy a midfield role since the likes of Andre, Joao Gomes and Mateus Mane have been playing well together, but wonderkid Mane could perhaps move up top to create room. There’s even the possibility that new signing Gomes could play as an inverted wing-back if Edwards gets a bit more creative.

Gomes, who has scored four goals in 20 appearances for Marseille, contributed 10 goals and 19 assists in 134 games at previous club Lille. At Portuguese club Boavista, where he spent a season, Gomes scored six and assisted six in 32 outings. Then, for Man Utd, Gomes turned out for the senior team on 10 occasions.
