The time has come for Bruno Fernandes to win an honour no Manchester United player has won for 15 years

Benjamin Sesko struck an injury time winner to seal Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Fulham, and he had a helping hand.

Once again it was Bruno Fernandes laying on the assist for a vital Manchester United goal.

If you are keeping track, Fernandes is now up to an incredible 99 assists in a Manchester United shirt, with two coming in the 3-2 win over Fulham.

Fernandes has 12 Premier League assists this season. He is three short of David Beckham‘s Manchester United record.

And it is even possible that the Premier League record of 20 assists in a season set by Thierry Henry could be toppled.

The individual statistics are fantastic – but there is also a growing case for individual honours…

Bruno Fernandes should win Premier League Player of the Season

Bruno Fernandes has been a consistent shining light for Manchester United ever since he signed for the club. He has a current total of 103 goals to go with his 99 assists.

Often during that time Fernandes has not got the credit he has deserved, for his performances, spirit and also his loyalty.

United fans appreciate Fernandes, but the wider football public has struggled to take to him.

Perhaps this year is the season it all changes, with Fernandes’ consistent brilliance becoming undeniable.

We are calling it now. Bruno Fernandes should win the Premier League Player of the Season Award for 2025/26.

At this stage of the campaign, Fernandes has 12 assists and five goals. He should have a couple more goals too if not for two missed penalties at the start of the season.

The Portugal international has swatted aside those setbacks and continued to deliver. In 21 appearances in the Premier League he has 17 goal contributions. He is playing better than ever.

United’s season stalled when Fernandes was out injured in late December. That was no coincidence.

His latest two assists saw him deliver a perfect set piece for Casemiro to score against Fulham, before beating his man on the touchline in stoppage time and whizzing in a defence-splitting ball for Benjamin Sesko to score.

United players wait for individual honours

It should perhaps not be surprising that no Manchester United player has won any Premier League Player of the Season Awards in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

But even in United’s last title-winning season in 2012/13, Robin van Persie was remarkably snubbed as Gareth Bale took home a clean sweep of awards.

The last Manchester United player to win one of the awards was Nemanja Vidic in 2010/11. Now 15 years ago, the Serbian won the league’s official award.

Wayne Rooney won the PFA Award and the Football Writer’s Awards the year prior in 2009/10 after a superb individual campaign.

Where else do you see a compelling case?

Bruno Fernandes’ own compelling case to win one of the awards is boosted by the lack of an outstanding argument elsewhere.

Arsenal are leading the league, but who has really impressed? Their set piece coach?

Erling Haaland’s goal record makes him a perennial contender, yet he has failed to deliver in big matches this season.

Antoine Semenyo has an argument with his Bournemouth performances, and his start at City. But is it really enough?

The race to win the awards is wide open, and Bruno Fernandes has a strong case, one that his body of work this season deserves, backed up by his record in previous campaigns.
