Sky sports claim deadline day medical imminent as Newcastle United agree transfer

Newcastle United transfers: Jamaal Lascelles is set to leave the club after 12 years.

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to let Jamaal Lascelles leave the club on deadline day.

The defender, who has captained Newcastle for the majority of his 253 appearances for the club, is set to end an influential 12-year stay on Tyneside.

Lascelles’ impact has been limited in recent season following an ACL injury picked up in March 2024. The defender hasn’t started a competitive game for the club since and was also effectively replaced as captain by Bruno Guimaraes.

Still, Lascelles lifted the Carabao Cup trophy at Wembley Stadium last season alongside Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier after Newcastle ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought.

The 32-year-old hasn’t been involved in any matchday squads for Newcastle since November, leading to speculation that he could be injured given the lack of defensive alternatives available to Eddie Howe.

As reported by The Gazette last month, Lascelles didn’t have an injury and was instead being kept available to leave the club during the winter window as his contract was set to expire in the summer.

Speaking about potential departures following the 4-1 loss at Liverpool, Howe said: “I think the only one that possibly could leave would be Jamaal Lascelles.”

With Howe usually tight-lipped regarding all things transfers, this was a big hint that the departure would happen.

Sky Sports report Jamaal Lascelles medical with Championship club

According to Sky Sports, Leicester City have won the race to sign Lascelles from Newcastle.

The defender is set to undergo a medical with the Championship club on deadline day. Leicester are understood to have beaten several Championship clubs, including Birmingham City to the defender.

Although Lascelles has hardly featured for Newcastle in recent seasons, he boasts an impressive CV as Newcastle captain. He led the club to promotion from the Championship in his first season as skipper and, in his last playing season as captain, led the side out in the Champions League as they secured a historic 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park.

But a serious injury, paired with the signings of players such as Sven Botman, Dan Burn and Malick Thiaw since the 2021 takeover, has seen Lascelles fall down the pecking order at Newcastle and seek a move away in order to get back to playing regular first-team football.
