Manchester United made a late attempt to sign one of the world's most promising young defenders but rivals Liverpool have a deal agreed

Manchester United tried to hijack Liverpool’s move for Jeremy Jacquet on Sunday but were unsuccessful in doing so, it has been claimed.

The Red Devils have not added any senior options to their squad so far this window and they are quickly running out of time to get any new arrivals through the door with the window closing at 7pm on Monday night.

Premier League rivals Liverpool have agreed a deal worth £60m to sign Jacquet. The move will officially happen in the summer but the Reds are looking to get all the agreements completed well ahead of time.

The young French defender was also the subject of interest from Chelsea and Bayern Munich but opted to agree a move to Anfield as he felt that was his most realistic route to regular first team football in the Premier League.

The Red Devils’ need for central defenders is less pressing than it was a number of weeks ago. Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system meant that more central defenders were needed but with Michael Carrick switching to a back four, it allows more rotation.

Matthijs de Ligt is currently out with a back injury that has sidelined him since November but Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Ayden Heaven are available. Maguire is out of contract at the end of the season and as things stand he is set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.
