Arsenal are exploring a surprise deadline day move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Gunners are on the lookout for late reinforcements in midfield following Mikel Merino’s injury and have already made direct calls regarding a late swoop for Tonali.
Plettenberg says a move for the Italy international will be very difficult to secure in the final hours of the window, as Newcastle are reluctant to broker a late deal:
"I've been told from very, very top sources that Arsenal are exploring a surprising deadline day move for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle and there have been direct talks in the last couple of hours.
"But for now, very, very difficult to finalise because [Newcastle] didn't give the green light. But Arsenal are still trying, they are pushing for Sandro Tonali to make the deal happen today."
