Newcastle United transfers: Sky Sport in Germany have made a shock claim linking Sandro Tonali with a deadline day move to Arsenal.
The Premier League leaders are looking to bolster their midfield options and Sky Sport in Germany has linked the Newcastle star as a target.
Tonali is under contract at Newcastle until 2029 with the option of a further year but has struggled for consistency in recent months after an impressive 2024/25 campaign which saw him help the club win the Carabao Cup and qualify for the Champions League.
While Newcastle have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League and progressed to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, their Premier League form has fallen short as they currently sit mid-table with 14 games left to play.
Tonali has previously admitted his future could be away from Newcastle in interviews earlier this season, but insists he is happy on Tyneside, having welcomed the birth of his first child, Leonardo, last month.
“This is a tough question because in football, you need to think year on year,” Tonali said when asked about his future at Newcastle back in November.
“I don’t want to say ‘I want to stay here 10 years’ and in two years, three years, four years, five years I will go. I want to think, just for me, year on year.
“This is football. Last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football.
“If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything. I don’t want to say, ‘Yes, I want to stay here for 10 years’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”
Arsenal linked with shock Sandro Tonali move
According to Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal are exploring a move for Tonali but agreeing a deal with Newcastle so late in the window will be ‘very difficult’.
He wrote on X: “EXCLUSIVE | Arsenal are exploring a surprising Deadline Day move for Sandro #Tonali. Very difficult at this stage, as Newcastle have rejected an initial approach. @SkySportDE.”
While Tonali’s form has been called into question in recent months, he remains an important, highly valued player at Newcastle, who won’t entertain such a significant departure at this stage.
