Plymouth Argyle Women booked their place in the FAWNL Cup Final at Queens Park Rangers' Loftus Road with a commanding 4-1 comeback victory over Burnley at Home Park, producing a ruthless second-half display in front of a buoyant Green Army.

Marie Hourihan's Greens will discover their opponents in the final at a later date, with the second semi-final between West Bromwich Albion and Bournemouth being postponed.

Despite falling behind to an early long-range strike, Argyle showed resilience, composure and attacking quality to turn the semi-final on its head, scoring four unanswered goals to secure a place in the showpiece final at the end of March.

Hourihan’s side grew into the contest after a challenging opening, equalising just before half-time and then taking full control after the break, with Phoebie Poole and Tianna Teisar playing key roles in the turnaround.

“It was an amazing performance from the girls,” Teisar said. “Obviously, to be in the final, we’re all really buzzing. I thought the girls put in a great shift today — winning duels, winning seconds and all having each other’s backs throughout the whole 90 minutes.”

Burnley began the contest with intensity and purpose, pressing Argyle high and enjoying early spells of possession. Their positive start was rewarded in the 13th minute when Millie Ravening spotted Hermione Cull off her line and produced an audacious long-range effort to give the visitors the lead.

Argyle initially found it difficult to gain momentum, with Burnley’s physicality and organisation limiting space in the final third. Cull and her defence were required to stay alert, dealing with a series of crosses and set pieces as the visitors looked to build on their advantage.

As the half progressed, the Greens began to settle. Increased confidence in possession and improved ball circulation allowed Argyle to move higher up the pitch and ask questions of the Burnley back line.

That pressure told in stoppage time. After Burnley failed to fully clear their lines, Teisar reacted quickest inside the area, showing sharp instincts to slot home and bring Argyle level at the break.

“We all had each other’s backs today,” Poole said. “Everyone put in 100 per cent and when we do that as a team we know we can get results like this.”

Argyle came out for the second half with renewed belief and wasted little time in asserting their authority. Within four minutes of the restart, Teisar drove into the penalty area and was brought down, earning the hosts a spot-kick.

Poole stepped up and, after a lengthy delay, calmly converted from the spot to give Argyle the lead.

“I just wanted the ref to stop telling people to get their toes out of the box,” Poole said. “I just kept calm, had a few deep breaths and took my shot.”

The goal sparked a dominant spell for the Greens. Argyle pressed high, won second balls and repeatedly threatened in transition. Teisar briefly thought she had added a third, only for the flag to deny her, while Burnley struck the post in their best moment of the half.

The visitors’ task was made more difficult when captain Yana Danïels was sent to the sin bin for dissent, and Argyle capitalised almost immediately. Ellie Noble’s effort was saved, but Teisar was once again alert to fire home the rebound and extend the lead.

Burnley pushed late on, but Argyle remained composed, and Poole added a fourth in stoppage time to cap a superb all-round performance.

“We knew we couldn’t let our heads drop after going behind,” Teisar said. “This team never gives up, and we made it count when we needed to.”

With a FAWNL Cup Final now secured, Argyle’s attention quickly turns back to league action and the push for promotion. The Greens remain well placed near the top of the table and will be looking to use the momentum from Sunday’s victory to strengthen their position in the title race.

Argyle travel to Gwalia next Sunday before returning to Home Park for a highly-anticipated Devon derby against Exeter City on February 18 - two fixtures that could prove pivotal as they look to put themselves in the best possible position for promotion.

Hourihan was keen to stress the importance of maintaining focus, praising both her players and the backing from the stands. “The Green Army were immense today,” she said. “They got behind the players, especially after we went 1-0 down, and that really helped us grow into the game.”

With confidence high, silverware on the horizon and promotion firmly in their sights, Argyle now face a defining period of their season.
