The impressive stats and performances that marked Melker Ellborg out as a potential Robin Roefs …

Sunderland completed their second signing of the January transfer window over the weekend

Sunderland are able to tie up some of their most important January transfer business over the weekend, with Melker Ellborg signing from Malmo and in turn allowing Anthony Patterson to go on loan to Millwall.

While Sunderland and Régis Le Bris were very happy for Patterson to stay as competition and cover for Robin Roefs, a loan move was always the ideal outcome. Sunderland need Patterson to be playing not just to maintain his development as a goalkeeper but also to protect his value if, as seems very likely, he is to depart on a permanent basis over the next couple of windows. For Patterson, the chance to reunite with Alex Neil and play a central part in another promotion push was always going to appeal.

Sunderland, though, needed a replacement. And after a move to sign experienced cover in Jonas Omlin did not proceed, the view was taken that it would be prudent to invest in a player who can offer depth now but also long-term competition for Roefs. Ellborg's arrival addresses Sunderland's immediate needs but also fulfils their desire to try and have long-term successors in place long before a key figure eventually leaves, if and when that proves to be the case. Ellborg, who comfortably stands above 6ft, is a player who they think shares similarities with Roefs and who could one day have a similar impact.

Like Jocelin Ta Bi, this is a calculated gamble as there is a relatively limited sample size of appearances from which to judge Ellborg. He has played just seven times in the Swedish top tier for Malmo, and an additional five times more recently in the Europa League. A Swedish youth international goalkeeper, he broke into the starting XI early in 2025 and though Robin Olsen took his place following his arrival in July, Ellborg has played more recently in European competition. Scouted by a number of big European clubs, including Manchester United, Ellborg has already been marked out as a young goalkeeper of real potential.

Even a brief glance at his stats from those 12 appearances for Malmo mark out some similarities with Roefs, and Sunderland will have had access to far more detailed footage and stats from his time in youth football. Ellborg kept five clean sheets in his seven league appearances last year and while that not be a major surprise given Malmo's strong status in Sweden, the underlying numbers demonstrate that he stepped up to senior football with ease. Ellborg only faced 12 shots on target in those seven games, but ten of them came from inside box. Ellborg conceded twice from an XG of 3.24, and his save percentage of 83.3% was in top 12% of goalkeepers at the level. His goals prevented of 0.18 per 90 minutes played was also in the top 20%. Encouragingly for Sunderland, his possession stats were also very solid. His successful pass percentage of over 75% was in the top 12% of keepers, and his accurate long pass percentage inside the top 12%. At this stage he is probably not as active in coming off his line as Roefs, but there is plenty of time to develop that.

As you'd expect, Ellborg faced a lot more shots during his Europa League appearances and that reinforces his image as a talented young shot-stopper. He conceded eight goals from 31 shots on target in his five appearances, 21 of which were from inside the box. Those eight goals came from an XG of 10.71, and so again he was marked out as an over performing goalkeeper inside the top 10% across the competition so far.

Only time will tell how Ellborg adapts to English football and how we can develop over a period of time, but he fits neatly with Sunderland's long-term strategy of investing in players with high potential. The Black Cats will also feel that his exposure (albeit limited) to a good standard of football, with which he has so far coped well with, means he can be ready if Roefs does pick up an injury or a suspension. It leaves Sunderland with three very talented young goalkeepers on their books, and that means they will go into the summer window and beyond from a position of real strength.
