Newcastle United have made a decision on Matt Targett’s immediate future.
Newcastle United will not recall Matt Targett from Middlesbrough to solve their mini injury crisis.
There had been speculation as to whether the Magpies would terminate his loan deal, with Lewis Hall the only fit left-back at the club. Injuries to Emil Krafth, Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento have left Newcastle light in defence.
Targett is out of contract in the summer and joined Boro on loan last August to see off his final year. The 30-year-old has proven a hit at the Riverside as Middlesbrough push for Premier League promotion.
Eddie Howe hinted at recall decision
Eddie Howe previously downplayed suggestions that Targett - who is happy on Teesside - would be recalled. However, speaking after the Liverpool defeat on the potential of triggering the clause before tomorrow’s deadline, Howe told reporters: "That's something we'll be discussing until the end of the window."
This cast doubt on Targett’s immediate future - with Boro also forced into a deadline-day sweat. The defender now has clarity as Newcastle are not expected to trigger his return.

Matt Targett on Middlesbrough aims
Targett suggested he had not been enjoying life on the sidelines at Newcastle after making the Boro switch. He also set his sights on promotion, with Middlesbrough currently sitting joint top of the Championship.
"It's been a couple of years without regular football,” Target said. “Once Middlesbrough came up I thought it was the right opportunity. I want to be back enjoying playing my football again.
"I watch it (the Championship) quite a lot. I kind of know how it can be and how important it is to recover, get yourself right for the next game and keep momentum. I'm excited to be playing in the Championship," he added.
"It's one year and then see what happens. Hopefully, I'll play plenty of football. Like I said to the club when I came here, I'm coming here to get promoted with this team. So that's the aim and we'll reassess at the end of the season.”
