Report: West Ham signing imminent as Nuno's transfer Deadline Day priority about to come off

West Ham United finally look set to strengthen their backline on Deadline Day.

It does not take a genius to suggest that West Ham United need to sign a central defender during the closing stages of the January transfer window.

Indeed, a new defender is Nuno Espirito Santo’s priority on Deadline Day, given his side have the worst defensive record across Europe’s major five leagues this season.

Several avenues have been explored. Only a few days ago, West Ham saw a bid rejected for Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Now, however, it seems as if the club have got their man in the form of Chelsea defender Axel Disasi.

Axel Disasi set to undergo Deadline Day medical at West Ham United

According to The Standard, the Hammers have booked a medical for the French defender on Deadline Day.

It seems that while the Blues did prefer the idea of a permanent sale given his complete lack of action this season, a straight loan move to the London Stadium now looks likely.

Disasi hasn’t played a competitive game at senior level in almost nine months, when he was on loan at Aston Villa in the second half of last season.

If you had to rate this signing between 1 and 5, what would you go for? 🤔

We're closing in on a defender, but is he the right one?! 👀

Axel Disasi‘s major U-turn on West Ham United move

It’s strange to think now, but Disasi rejected a move to West Ham during the summer of 2025.

Only a few months later, however, he’s seemingly about to make a major U-turn.

Quite why remains unclear. West Ham are hardly in a better position now than they were back then, after all.

This does feel like a big risk for the Hammers. Nuno needs players to hit the ground running and there’s just no guarantee Disasi can do that.

Though clearly a solid defender at his best, his complete lack of meaningful action does need to be taken into account.
